Coming to LA its quite the opposite of Fiji. I would not imagine that the day I arrived in California, the state would almost experience record low temperatures. In the first days of our stay we read about snow in LA 2 times (note: we read this in Norwegian newspaper, but we did not see it ourselves!)…we quickly realised that we’d left the tropical and exotic atmosphere experienced in Fiji. Tropical shirts and jeans with holes were no longer comfortable (luckily Mexico and the warmer areas are just 10 days away!..phew!)

I know this looks very warm and romantic, but it was actually bloody cold!! Did not see either the Hoff, CJ nor TC Callaway at the beach…

Another different sight at Santa Monica beach, a memorial for ALL fallen US soliders in the IRAQ war:

We’ve been in California for a week now, and in seven days we have managed to squeeze in a lot of sightseeing, dining, driving, clubbing, cinema and shopping. Tommy’s cousin, Gunnar, is a very friendly host and he is a big help to our visit as he is practially driving us everywhere all the time (thanks Gunnar!). Gunnar has lived in LA for over 18 years and knows a lot about what to see and what to day (and of course how to get there :) ).

On the first night, Gunnar took us to his favourite Sushi bar in North Hollywood. I have never really been a BIG sushi fan, but I think this night marked the day where me and Tommy really got hooked on sushi. The chef, Shig Chiba was a true sushi master, and according to Mike (1st from left), Shig makes 10 times better sushi than everyone else.

The next days were spent mostly walking/driving down memory lane, as Alice (Tommy’s mum) was eager to check out all the places she used to know when she lived in California. As anticipated things have changed, bushes are now trees, friendly neighbourhoods have turned into dodgy ‘hoods’ and in general it seemed like the biggest difference was that more areas are filled with houses, factories, highways and business development. No wonder though, this city is HUGE and the distances are GREAT…apperatently California alone has one of the 10 largest economies of the world.

Corona del Mar, a beach area outside LA (appx 40-60min drive) that Alice used to go to. The area is still popular, but heavily populated and very expensive….can’t complain about the views and the beaches….very nice!

Besides revising sites and places we also met up with relatives of Tommy, Alice and Gunnar. On Saturday we had lunch in Orange County at the residence of Tommy’s second cousin. The lunch was very nice and it was fun meeting the people there. The family that invited us had a snake (boa constrict, 1,5m=4-5feet) as a pet… this was a funny experience, especially for me with my jeans (with lots of holes)…The snake slithered it way into my pants torn crouch hole, but with a terrified expression came out of my pants having just realized it wasn’t the biggest snake in town. Haha

Friday night was spent clubbing with Tommy’s friend, Matthew (or Bassman, his alter ego) is a funny fella (See for yourself in the gallery) currently working on Knocked up. Finally seing Matthew after a year, him and tommy spent the first hours sharing stories of debauchery until we took a cab to Hollywood. The cabie I may add was the coolest cabdriver encountered in my entire clubbing career. The bar we went to was small, but friendly with a good mix of people and gals. Nathan, a uni friend of Tommy rocked up. A wholesome southern man he was. In the picture wearing Tennesse jersey. To my aggravation the bar ended its business at 2am. Unheard of. I thought we were in Hollywood. Hollywood.

Clubbing in West Hollywood, Matthew, Martin (me), Nathan, Richard and some weird-looking guy in front (who is that??) today Tommy’s mum left for Norway…and tonight we’re back on the road again catching a bus towards San Francisco.

and at last: a nice picture of a couple doing some kind of fitness-show-off-stretch-out-excercise!:

PS: We have uploaded 80 pictures from Los Angeles, along with captions…see them at our gallery at
